At Hendrick Honda Hickory over the years, we've watched our new inventory get safer and safer, introducing new features that not only protect you during a crash, but that can help prevent a crash, too.

Traffic safety isn't all in the hands of automakers, however. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has a few recommendations for cost-effective roadway improvements that could save thousands of lives.

1. Roundabouts. Yes, they confuse people. Yes, you'll have to deal with people yielding when they're already in the roundabout, and failing to yield as they enter—but these mistakes tend to lead to more minor fender-benders, rather than the deadly T-bone accidents that occur in traditional four-way intersections.

According to AAA, converting intersections to roundabout could reduce injuries and deaths by 30 percent.

2. Median barriers. The grassy strip between traffic heading east and west on I-40 may be wide enough to make you feel comfortable, but if a driver falls asleep at the wheel or runs off-road, they can easily cross the divide into oncoming vehicles.

AAA claims median barriers could reduce traffic fatalities by 14 percent.
